The Art of the Diversion: Why Bully Ray’s Moxley Callout Outed the "Busted Open" Double Standard

If you tuned into Busted Open Radio today, you were treated to a masterclass in pro wrestling misdirection. Bully Ray took to the airwaves to firmly insert himself into the central wrestling conversation, aggressively burying AEW’s top champion and faction.

According to Bully, Jon Moxley is a “fraud,” and the Death Riders haven’t done a single thing to move the needle for AEW. He didn't stop at creative critique, either—he threw down a direct challenge, stating bluntly: “I would kick the sh*t out of Jon Moxley.”

It’s loud, it’s provocative, and it’s classic Bully Ray. But if you look past the standard shock-jock bravado, the timing and the context reveal a much bigger story—one defined by a glaring double standard, backstage loyalty, and the hunt for one last major payday.

The Comfort of the Safety Net

It is increasingly difficult to take the “impartial wrestling analyst” routine seriously when the financial and corporate ties are this blatant. Bully Ray can use a massive satellite radio platform to aggressively take down AEW's top champion because he is protected by a WWE Legends contract.

He can yell from the sidelines with zero risk to his own bottom line, safe in the knowledge that his primary corporate loyalty is locked into Stamford.

This selective bravery looks even worse when you look at how Busted Open handles its own platform. Not long ago, as detailed in the widely circulated graphic above, the show chose to run a soft, inspirational interview with Izzy/ALW.

In doing so, they completely dodged documented safeguarding issues and training links to (pedophile) Chasyn Rance's dojo—a failure of basic journalistic responsibility in favor of maintaining a comfortable narrative.

When a show willingly avoids asking the hard questions to protect its circle, but happily manufactures aggressive, unchecked feuds with external promotions, the "impartiality" completely evaporates.

Circling the Wagons for Tommy Dreamer

You cannot look at today’s outburst without looking at what just happened to the Busted Open family. Last week, Tommy Dreamer was abruptly cut from TNA Wrestling as part of a sudden "workforce reduction".

Dreamer had spent a decade holding down the fort in TNA's creative and talent relations departments, and his emotional exit was quickly followed by a wave of online criticism regarding old-school locker room mindsets and negative reports.

Bully Ray is fiercely loyal to his ECW brethren. When his co-host and close friend takes a massive professional hit and faces a wave of negative press, Bully's instinct is to go on the offensive.

Burying Jon Moxley and the Death Riders is the ultimate wrestling smoke screen. By shouting a wild, violent claim over the morning airwaves, Bully successfully shifted the entire focus of the internet wrestling community away from the messy TNA fallout and onto himself.

It keeps Busted Open at the center of the wrestling universe, while protecting a friend from being the week’s primary talking point.

Angling for the Final Payday

Of course, Bully Ray is also an expert businessman who knows exactly how to work the IWC. He isn't throwing out a fight invite to the top deathmatch wrestler of the modern era just to pass the time.

An ECW/Hardcore icon squaring off against Jon Moxley in a cross-promotional or high-profile independent bloodfeud is a built-in pay-per-view attraction. Bully is throwing a hook into the water to see if Tony Khan or Moxley will bite.

If they ignore him, he gets to claim he's the unfiltered tough guy the locker room is afraid of. If they answer the call, he sets himself up for a massive marquee match and a historic payday.
