FTR is Stepping Away from Wrestling—And It Sucks, Plain and Simple
There’s no easy way to spin this one, AEW fans.
Right as the wrestling world is gearing up for major upcoming shows, we just got hit with some of the most deflating news possible.
FTR—Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler—have announced they are stepping away from the ring for the first time in 12 years.
Worse yet? They aren't sure when, or even if, they are coming back.
The bombshell dropped via Dax Harwood’s Instagram, and the quote hits like a total gut punch:
"For the first time in 12 years, we've decided to step away and take some time for ourselves and for our families. I'm not sure when we'll be back, what we're going to do, how much longer we have, or if we even need to prove anything at all anymore.”
The Worst Possible Timing
Let’s look at the landscape right now. AEW is staring down a massive summer schedule, and losing arguably the greatest traditional tag team on the planet leaves a massive, gaping crater in the division.
To make matters even more tense, rumors have been swirling for a while that their contracts might be expiring soon. Hearing them openly question "how much longer we have" or if they "even need to prove anything" sounds terrifyingly like a soft retirement or a permanent exit from AEW.
It sucks. It just flat-out sucks.
The Only Silver Lining
If you want to find a shred of positivity here, it has nothing to do with what happens inside the ropes.
These guys have been grinding at the absolute highest, most punishing level of professional wrestling for over a decade. They have given their bodies, their time, and their lives to this business.
If they feel it’s time to go home, be fathers, be husbands, and prioritize their families over another 5-star match, you can’t do anything but respect it.
Good for them for recognizing they need a break before the business breaks them completely. But as fans? Man. FTR matches are the gold standard, and AEW is fundamentally a different show without them.
