Wrestling Referee Killed: Another Needless Tragedy in the Ring
"This one beggars belief."
Another brain-dead move in a pro wrestling ring has resulted in the absolute worst possible outcome: a referee has been killed.
What Happened
During an independent show in Hidalgo, Mexico, veteran referee Gerardo Peneda—known as El Búho (The Owl), a 15-year wrestler and 30-year refereeing lifer—was in the ring for a match between Hijo de Fishman and Máscara Sagrada Jr.
After losing the match, Hijo de Fishman took it upon himself to brutally attack the 70-year-old official without any prior warning, planning, or consent. He dropped El Búho head-first onto the canvas with a devastating double-underhook piledriver.
The Aftermath & Negligence
Left to Die on the Mat: El Búho lay motionless for several minutes. Because referees often sell moves or lie still during a show, nobody rushed to help him at first, with people mistakenly assuming it was part of the act.
No Medical Staff: Stunningly, there was no ambulance or medical personnel on standby at the venue. When paramedics finally showed up, they could only confirm that he had already passed away.
Was He Arrested?
Yes. Hijo de Fishman was immediately taken into police custody and arrested. Authorities held him to determine criminal charges—namely manslaughter for recklessly endangering a fellow performer without consent.
As James put it: "How is that really any different from a figure skating judge getting kicked in the neck? That's still assault whether it's a pro wrestling show, a figure skating show, or a gymnastics event."
Rest in Peace Gerardo Peneda.
