More Draws, Count-Outs & Old-School Finishes Please: WrestleVoice Quick Take
My guy R-Dubs has been preaching this forever and Tuesday’s WWE Speed match just proved his point again. We just saw a straight-up time-limit draw on a WWE NXT Speed match between Sean Legacy and Dorian Van Dux.
Because of the tournament rules, both guys got eliminated. No winner, no loser, just two dudes who went balls-to-the-wall for three minutes and couldn’t finish each other off.
And honestly? I marked out for it.
Here’s the thing: in a 3-minute sprint format like Speed, a draw actually makes the matches feel harder and more realistic. Beating someone clean in under three minutes should be a big deal — not the expected outcome every single time.
Draws, count-outs, double pins, and those classic old-school endings protect everybody and let feuds breathe instead of forcing someone to look weak every week.
AEW fans (including R-Dubs, who’s a big AEW guy) have been saying this forever.
AEW barely uses draws. Almost every match has a decisive winner, which is great for momentum… until it isn’t. Sometimes you need that “we’re not done yet” feeling without burying talent.
Imagine how perfect a draw would’ve felt in some of the recent JetSpeed stuff, or during Owen Hart Cup qualifiers, or even in a high-stakes mid-card feud. It keeps the story going strong without anyone taking an unnecessary L.
WWE Speed just accidentally reminded us how good these finishes can feel when used right. More of this across the board — AEW included — would be awesome.
