Meltzer, Alvarez, and the Great "Son of Sting" Over-Push Debate
If you ever needed proof that online wrestling discourse occasionally swallows its own tail over absolute non-issues, look no further than Dave Meltzer and Brian Alvarez practically having a very late mid-life marital dispute over a 45-second backstage promo on AEW Dynamite.
According to James Romero’s breakdown of the latest Wrestling Observer meltdown, Dave and Brian blew a gasket because Adam Copeland told Steven Borden (Son of Sting) and Darby Allin that they're reaching too high, too fast.
Dave defended the promo as basic heel psychology, Brian argued Copeland should be mad at Tony Khan instead of the babyfaces, and Dave ultimately cut him off on air with the peak-narcissism sign-off: "You're not going to get the point, so let's just move on."
Classy!
But Wait... James is Missing the Real Problem Here
While it's hilarious watching the Observer crew bicker like a couple of old battle-axes over nothing, let’s be entirely real for a second: James is wrong too.
Everybody is acting like Copeland was out of line for talking down to a rookie, but let's look at the actual facts:
Steven Borden is 34 years old and green as grass!
Suddenly walking into the company and immediately being slotted into high-profile tag title conversations as if he inherited his dad's mythical powers is a joke. LMAO—fuck that.
If you're going to put a guy with next to zero seasoning right next to world-class veterans and top-tier talent, he shouldn't be exchanging sharp, back-and-forth verbal barbs or sniffing around championship gold. He should be eating pins and earning his stripes on the lower card like everybody else.
If AEW wants to establish him, great. But don't act shocked when the audience—and veterans in storylines—look at a guy who just got here and think, "Hold on, what are we doing here?"
