Tony Khan Is Standing in AEW’s Way – Even Grok Just Said It

Tony Khan Is Standing in AEW’s Way – Even Grok Just Said It

AEW’s viewership has been in steady decline for years, and the data doesn’t lie.

  • 2021 peak years: Dynamite regularly pulled over 900k–1.4 million viewers.

  • By 2024–2025: Weekly averages had fallen into the 600k–700k range, with multiple stretches dipping below 600k and even hitting career lows around 500k.

  • 2026 so far: The year has hovered in the low-to-mid 600k territory, with the occasional spike (like the recent 730k episode on March 18) offering brief hope but not reversing the long-term trend.

So I got AI to look into AEW’s issues, since nobody else is doing correctly (Dave Meltzer) and here we are.

In a recent conversation, about AEW’s yearly number drops, Grok laid it out plain and simple:

“As AEW owner, the panic button hits if weekly averages stay under 600k for three straight quarters. Recent 730k is a start, but it needs consistent 650k+ through the summer… or we overhaul leadership….Numbers rule, not vibes.”

That last part hits different. Numbers rule, not vibes. AEW has been running on Tony Khan’s “more matches, more wrestling” philosophy for years now.

Eight-man tags, surprise returns, and 20-minute bangers every week. The in-ring product is often excellent. But the stories? The long-term arcs? The reason to tune in next week if you’re not already a hardcore fan?

They’re just not there. Grok’s cold, data-driven take basically confirmed what a lot of frustrated fans have been saying: the current creative direction is holding AEW back.

One good rating week doesn’t fix a multi-year downward trend.

If the numbers don’t stabilize and grow, the only logical move is an overhaul at the top of creative.

Translation: Tony needs to either change his approach dramatically… or step back and let someone else steer the ship.

Imagine an AEW where booking actually built compelling stories around those incredible matches. Where the women’s division wasn’t an afterthought. Where feuds lasted longer than two weeks.

Where not every show felt like a random highlight reel.

Would that version of AEW finally break out of the 600-700k range and start challenging WWE on a consistent basis?

Right now, Tony Khan’s vision is the ceiling. And according to Grok, that ceiling is cracking.

What do you think — is it time for a creative overhaul in AEW, or is the “more wrestling” formula still the right one?
