John Cena Classic: The Dumbest Idea in Pro Wrestling History? Double Dose of Veteran Abuse

John Cena, fresh off retirement, dropped what might be his wildest post-career brainchild at WWE Backlash 2026: The John Cena Classic — a new annual event pitting main roster stars against NXT talent for a brand-new championship.

The twist? Wins and losses in the ring don’t matter. The champion gets crowned purely by fan vote. Hustle, loyalty, and popularity contests over actual wrestling.

Yeah… that one.

Jeff Jarrett’s Take (The Storytelling Killer)

On his My World podcast, Double J was diplomatic at first — he gets the business side. Social media polls everywhere, TikTok engagement, custom content, probably a sponsor tie-in with Cena’s VO work.

It’s a funnel for fan interaction. But then he hit the real issue:

“From the storytelling component of this, you can become champion and you don’t have to win your matches… we may be all kind of overthinking this… but we at least want to get lost in the story, someone trying to WIN the title.

It takes that component out — the suspension of disbelief. Why do we care when a hip toss happens or a false finish or a spectacular move off the top rope?”

Stevie Richards Goes Nuclear (“Stupidest Idea EVER?”)

On The Stevie Richards Show, SR and the crew didn’t hold back. They called it convoluted, unworkable, and full of pitfalls:

  • Why would any heel bother?

  • Main roster vets making NXT guys look good… only for the cheap pop to steal the “title” and potentially cost the veteran their spot?

  • WWE letting fans actually control outcomes? (Remember Taboo Tuesday/Cyber Sunday chaos?)

  • What if someone they don’t want to push (LA Knight vibes, Zack Ryder flashbacks, or worse) wins the vote?

  • Backstage scrambling with no fixed brackets or match order.

Stevie straight-up labeled it one of the dumbest concepts he’s seen, with Lance Storm and others echoing the confusion.

Even Cena reportedly ended his announcement with “I hope this works.” That’s not exactly a ringing endorsement.
